Elevator 32
Typeface Design & Type Specification Boooklet
Brief:
Create a typeface based on any piece of architecture of your choice.
Interpretation:
The Chrysler Building has always been something that I’d marvelled at and so it was an easy decision for me to base a typeface around it. The structure itself however posed me a few problems. The shapes that were created on the exterior guided me in several ways that made my designs very rigid, however I wanted a more fluid, elegant stroke from this feat of architecture. After close study of the interior, the arches, the juxtaposed right-angles and isosceles triangles have inspired this serif font. I wanted the name to be subtle. There are 32 elevators inside the Chrysler Building and it interested me that elevators lie within the structure and without them, navigation of a skyscraper of its scale would be impractical.
